Want to know which parks hold the UK's most unique and thrilling roller coasters are?
The UK is chocked full of exhilarating roller coasters and attractions. But sometimes it may be difficult to choose which to ride next and where the best are, so I present to you a list of some of (in my opinion) best roller coasters within the UK!
Nemesis- Alton Towers - Sit back, it’s fright time!
There is simply no way of me describing just how good this roller coaster is, a true UK classic! This monstrous Bolliger and Mabillard invert has been roaring since 1994 and has earned the title of one of the best of its kind in the world. Its old school suspended style gives it an intense whip and flash which is something that newer models just can’t replicate. Along with its stellar theming and terrain, this coaster is an instant 10/10!
Icon- Blackpool pleasure beach- dare to ride
Heading further up North towards the amazing Blackpool Pleasure Beach you will find the UK’s one and only multi launch! Built by the German manufacturer MACK rides and opened in 2018, this ride is one of a kind! Located in a park with very historic and ancient coasters, Icon is a shining jewel that has taken the community by storm. With its wonderful restraints, long ride duration, buttery smooth experience and lots of airtime, This ride is truly one of a kind!
The Swarm- Thorpe park- the end is coming
Set in an apocalyptic world where an ancient species of cybernetic aliens attempt to destroy all mankind, the Swarm takes you through the heart of it. Swooping through ripped up airplane wings and blasted through billboards. The swarm is currently the UK’s only Bolliger and Mabillard wing coaster which seats you either side of the track. Each re-ride on this terrifying coaster is a new experience. Do you want to sit on the right side at the back, or the left side at the front? It all comes down to personal preference, but one thing’s for sure, the Swarm is amazing!
Wicker man- Alton towers- feed the flames
Wicker man is the UK’s first wooden coaster since Megaphobia which opened in 1996! This GCI (great coasters international) roller coaster is the first to ever incorporate both wood and fire into the experience. Its compact but intense layout can provide thrills for both younger and older adrenaline addicts. Wicker man is by far and away one of the best themed experiences in the entire country as the large wicker statue stands tall with its incredibly ominous presence.
The Smiler- Alton towers- Smile always
Once again located at Alton towers resort, the Smiler (built by gerstlauer) holds the world record for the most inversions on any roller coaster! With an incredible 14 inversions, The Smiler takes you through a multitude of different elements and even two lift hills. The large structure in the middle is known as the marmaliser which has several different compartments which all combinate into a large spider like appearance. Although I highly recommend the ride, it can be quite rough at a few spots and possibly quite dizzying but all in all please go check it out!
And finally…..
The Pepsi Max Big one- Blackpool pleasure beach
The Big one is the definition of a UK roller coaster, and no it’s not because it has the union jack slathered all over it. It’s both exciting and historic. Built by the now defunct American manufacturer Arrow dynamics, the Big one is currently the tallest coaster in the UK, standing at a whopping 213ft tall! This makes it not only the tallest in the UK but also one of the tallest in Europe! Sadly the ride isn’t particularly smooth and can be pretty shaky sometimes, but there is no denying the monumental impact this coaster has had on the UK coaster community and just like every other coaster on this list, deservers a spot!
